3 Excuses Keeping Coaches from Starting Online Businesses (and how to overcome them)

If you’ve been reading my stuff for a while, you probably know that I am a huge advocate for all coaches getting their businesses online as soon as possible and starting your passive income stream now (read this article for more on that)!

I know, from my experience running my Coach Changemakers Academy that every coach can build a solid online business in about 6 months if they want to, but there are some common excuses that get in the way – if you let them.

So, I thought I’d take the opportunity to lay three of those excuses out, re-frame them….and maybe, for some of you, that will be all you need to stop procrastinating and get building that online income stream now!

Excuse 1: I get overwhelmed with all the different technologies.

Of course there is a lot to learn.! To get online you need to use a handful of new technologies. This will require you getting out of your comfort zone and picking up some new skills.

It’s not really hard, it’s just a lot of new things at the same time!

Re-frame: This technology is easy when you focus on one step at a time.

Technology has come such a long way since I launched my first coaching website in 2009. Nowadays, the systems you need to use to build an online business are heaps more intuitive for the beginner and are pretty easy to plug together.

So, as long as you can keep clear on what you need to do, and in which order (get the building blocks here), the technology is just a series of building blocks. First you set up one block, then you bolt on the second, then the third, and so on until you have a fully functional online business.

Excuse 2: I don’t know anything about pricing.

You’d be surprised how often I hear this one! It really holds a lot of coaches back. If you’re telling yourself this, please stop, let go, and move on in your business by using the next re-frame…

Re-frame: The best way to learn about pricing is to start selling.

The good thing about an online business is that you can change your pricing as often as you like. Eventually you will find the right price that your audience responds favourably to – i.e. they buy.

For example, let’s say you have written an eBook that you want to sell. Start your eBook at $20. Then run a promotion for 10$. Then change it to $14.97. Stick with the price that makes you the most money. It’s that easy!

Excuse 3: But I see how some online businesses market themselves and I don’t want to be like them.

True, there are lots of tacky offers out there. My inbox gets at least 5 pushy promotional offers a day that link through to a web page with big red headlines, endless text, tons of testimonials and a million bonuses.

The product may be good but the sales-pitch is a HUGE turn-off!

Re-frame: Join the new wave of content marketing.

Here is the thing, it is possible to use the techniques that these online millionaires are using – minus the tackiness. It’s what I do with my business and it’s working!

In fact, I think that in the next few years we are going to witness a total reversal from totally tacky marketing to totally heartfelt and genuine marketing. We are ahead of the curve now, but just imagine, if you get your business online this year, and promote your products in a heartfelt and genuine way, you will be a leader in the new wave of content marketing!

In Closing

Coaching, coaching, coaching, is a great way to spend your time. Fun. Transformational. Fulfilling.

But eventually, you will need a break. We all do.

This is why having an online business that makes money while you sleep is so good (both for your wallet and your sanity).

So, with this in mind, be sure to set aside some time each week to build your online business (here is the Best Sequence for Starting a Smart Online Coaching Business) – slow and steady is totally fine.

If you are looking for a proved, guided approach, check out my Coach Changemakers Academy program. I run it twice a year with a handful of coaches in each intake.

Either way, remember, YOU drive every momentum in your coaching business. YOU make things happen!

So, what excuses are you prepared to let go of right now to get moving forward? I’d love to hear them!
